Answer
Military ranks
This is a category match puzzle — each clue is a member of Military ranks, not a loose thematic association.
Analysis
The first clue, "General", opens the board with intentional ambiguity. In Pinpoint, a single clue rarely proves the category — it is a starting hypothesis, not a verdict.
"Private" narrows the field. A valid category must explain both "General" and "Private" with the same rule — not two separate stories.
By "Major", the category "Military ranks" should start to feel inevitable. Three clues with one rule beats three clues with three excuses.
"Colonel" adds another member of the same set. Each new row should strengthen "Military ranks", not send you hunting for a new theme.
"Lieutenant" is the stress test. If "Military ranks" still fits naturally here, the puzzle is solved; if not, your category is too narrow or too broad.
Read together, "General", "Private", "Major", "Colonel", and "Lieutenant" converge on "Military ranks". That convergence — one precise category, five varied clues — is the structure Pinpoint rewards.
Clues
Connection to answer
General satisfies the category "Military ranks" in the same straightforward way as the other rows. That is why "General" belongs under the broader category — it is a member, not a metaphor standing alone.
Solving role
As the opening clue, "General" is intentionally broad. List two or three possible categories, then wait.
Connection to answer
Private satisfies the category "Military ranks" in the same straightforward way as the other rows. That is why "Private" belongs under the broader category — it is a member, not a metaphor standing alone.
Solving role
As a pattern check, "Private" tests whether your working category still holds without special pleading.
Connection to answer
Major satisfies the category "Military ranks" in the same straightforward way as the other rows. That is why "Major" belongs under the broader category — it is a member, not a metaphor standing alone.
Solving role
The pivot clue ("Major") is where "Pivot clue" happens — three clues should point one direction.
Connection to answer
Colonel satisfies the category "Military ranks" in the same straightforward way as the other rows. That is why "Colonel" belongs under the broader category — it is a member, not a metaphor standing alone.
Solving role
As a confirmation clue, "Colonel" tests whether your working category still holds without special pleading.
Connection to answer
Lieutenant satisfies the category "Military ranks" in the same straightforward way as the other rows. That is why "Lieutenant" belongs under the broader category — it is a member, not a metaphor standing alone.
Solving role
The final lock ("Lieutenant") should make the category feel inevitable when read against the earlier clues.
Verification
"Military ranks" fits because it explains "General", "Private", "Major", "Colonel", and "Lieutenant" under one rule without exception. Pinpoint is not asking for five separate facts — it is asking for the single collection or pattern that every clue already belongs to. A category that fits four clues but fails on the fifth is wrong; "Military ranks" clears all five.
Solve path
With only "General", many categories could fit. Hold your first guess and watch what clue 2 eliminates. "General" and "Private" must share one repeatable link — not a coincidence between two words. By clue 3 ("Major"), "Military ranks" should explain all three without bending meanings. "Colonel" strengthens "Military ranks" rather than opening a new theory. The final clue ("Lieutenant") confirms "Military ranks" — if it still fits naturally, the category is locked.
Pattern
The clues look unrelated on the surface but share one precise category. Read all five before guessing — the link should feel natural on every row.

LinkedIn Pinpoint #895 layers 5 clues that each suggest a different starting hypothesis. "Military ranks" is the one connection that holds across every clue without bending the meaning — that uniqueness is what Pinpoint rewards, not the first plausible match.
When the answer is a defined collection like "Military ranks", every clue tends to be a concrete member rather than a property or association. If you can classify a clue (say, "Major") as one example of the answer category immediately, you are on the right track. If you reach for adjectives instead of a noun category, step back and try a broader label.
"Military ranks" explains every clue ("General", "Private", "Major", "Colonel", and "Lieutenant") without overreach. The pattern — five varied surface forms, one precise connecting concept — is the core Pinpoint structure. Noticing it on this board speeds up future puzzles in the same family.

Solution
This puzzle asks you to find the single category linking five clues: General, Private, Major, Colonel, and Lieutenant. The answer is Military ranks. The clues look unrelated on the surface but share one precise category. Read all five before guessing — the link should feel natural on every row.
